What Commerce and PayPal’s Research Reveals About Agentic AI Shopping

Commerce and PayPal recently released new research, conducted by Logica Research, on how consumers want to use agentic AI when shopping. Across the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, consumers are interested in tools that can save them time and money, but purchase confirmation, security and control remain important to adoption.

What Commerce and PayPal’s Research Reveals About Agentic AI Shopping 1

Consumers want AI to help them shop

In the U.S., 28% of online shoppers already use AI tools when shopping, primarily to research products, find the best prices and compare options. Half of these shoppers say AI helps them spend less time looking for products than traditional online searches.

And many more consumers are open to using AI for shopping, even if they aren’t currently doing so. Sixty-seven percent (67%) of U.S. online shoppers are interested in trying an agentic AI shopping tool and 83% see at least one benefit to using one. Finding better prices and promotions and identifying the right products faster are among the biggest draws to trying it out.

Shoppers aren’t ready to hand over checkout

The report, “Agentic AI Shopping Research,” shows that consumers are most interested in having agentic AI help during product research and comparison. When it comes to actually making a purchase, they want more control. Thirty-eight percent (38%) of U.S. shoppers don’t want an agentic AI shopping tool making purchases for them at all. Asking for confirmation before making a purchase is the top feature that would increase willingness to use one, followed by fraud protection and the ability to cancel purchases without penalty.

Recent coverage has also highlighted this hesitation. Hello Partner’s “AI Hesitancy for Online Shopping Witnessed Across Generations” referenced this Commerce and PayPal research in its look at why consumers remain wary of allowing AI to complete online purchases.

Trust will play a big role in adoption

The research shows that payment security is a major expectation with 82% of U.S. shoppers expecting agentic AI shopping tools to provide security equal to or better than other payment methods. It found that transparency matters to shoppers as well. More than half (55%) say sponsored content and ads should be clearly identifiable and 49% say retailers and brands shouldn’t be able to pay for preferential treatment.

The research points to an opportunity for AI to take some of the work out of shopping without taking the shopper out of the decision. Access the complete Agentic AI Shopping Research report.
